Ultimate Small Shop
Make room for the work you love.
A workbench, a place for your tools and room to move. Ralph Chapman’s illustrated guide helps you plan a woodworking shop around the space you actually have.
Independent guide. We may earn a commission if you buy through our links.
One-minute layout check
Start with the door.
On a scrap of paper, sketch the walls of your workspace. Add these three details before you choose where a tool will live.
- Draw the door swing. Mark the floor it sweeps when it opens.
- Outline the bench. Include anything that sticks out, like a vise.
- Trace a board’s path. Sketch how your longest board would travel from storage to the bench.
Inside the guide
From an empty corner to a shop plan.
The publisher organizes the guide into six modules. Three decisions run through them.
- Which tools earn their space?
- Tool-selection guidance and shopping lists help you weigh your first purchases against the projects you want to make.
- Where will the work happen?
- Compare potential rooms and use the floor-plan examples to think through bench placement, storage and the movement of stock.
- What else does the room need?
- Later chapters cover power, lighting, noise, ventilation, dust and shop safety as part of the overall setup.
Before you buy
Is it right for your shop?
Who will get the most use from it?
It suits a woodworker choosing tools for a first home shop or rearranging a crowded one. The focus is setting up the workspace. If you already have a working shop and want plans for a specific piece of furniture, look for plans for that piece.
What will I receive?
The publisher provides downloadable PDF guides through a members area and sends access information by email after purchase. Tools, materials and workshop equipment are separate purchases.
What should I budget?
Separate the guide’s price from the cost of tools, materials and changes to your room. Your existing equipment and local prices affect the total. The publisher shows the current offer before checkout.
Where do I check the terms or get help?
Check the purchase and refund terms on the publisher’s order page. For a question about delivery or an existing order, use the publisher’s support page.
